In May 2009, Sheena Matheiken pledged to "wear one dress for one year as an exercise in sustainable fashion". From there, The Uniform Project was born. The dress, designed by Eliza Starbuck, is convertible and can be worn front or back, or as an open tunic. She is now on Day 216, having survived (amazingly!) using donated accessories and garment additives from eBay sellers and fans of the project. Each day she takes this simple dress and seemingly turns it into a new piece of garment. Amazing!
At its start, Sheena writes,
"Every day I will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds of accouterments, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies. Think of it as wearing a daily uniform with enough creative license to make it look like I just crawled out of the Marquis de Sade's boudoir."
So far, Sheena (along with Eliza's amazing dress design) has raised over $50,000 in donations for the benefit of the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots organization that Sheena says "is revolutionizing education in India". Contributions will go toward Akanksha’s School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for children living in Indian slums. This amount, alone, will help 142 kids in Indian schools.
Wow!!!
